Unfortunately, most injuries associated with woodworking are due to erroneous practices – not following safety rules. Although woodworkers can prevent these wounds, they don’t take cognisance of it. To avoid the furtherance of injuries, artisans should have the following inexpensive personal protective equipment:
1. Respirator
Use a respirator when working with high sawdust-producing practices and volatile compounds. These can include sawing, paint stripper, spray paint, wood treatments, sanding, etc.
2. Safety Glasses
Wearing safety glasses will protect your eyes from possible projectiles that can damage eyes. Also, wearing a pair of safety goggles over safety glasses will add an extra layer of protection against vapour and dust.
3. Gloves
Gloves will safeguard your hands from potential injuries from cuts, splinters, etc. Bear in mind that you can’t wear gloves while using some power tools like table saws.
4. Face Shield
Unlike safety glasses, a face shield protects the entire face against projectiles. It’s typically used during grinding but can serve diverse purposes too.
5. Hearing Protection
Most of the power tools in a woodworking shop produce 85dB or more. At this threshold, always wear hearing protection.
6. Steel Tip Boots
These boots prevent your feet from getting injured with sharp objects above or below your feet.
